Rising Star: Nikki Glaser isn't new to TV, but 2016 looks like her year

Nikki Glaser isn't a newcomer to TV. But 2016 feels like her year.

This is the year that Comedy Central tapped Glaser, 32, for her own show, with her name in the title.

"Not Safe With Nikki Glaser," which just wrapped up its first season but still streams on the Comedy Central website and on Hulu, is a little dirty. It's also precisely the show Glaser wanted it to be.

"I finally got a show where I had a lot of creative control and could be true to myself," she says. "That makes me happy."

Three years ago, Glaser had another show, "Nikki and Sara Live," with her friend and podcast mate, Sara Schaefer. MTV didn't pick up a second season, but Glaser still came out on top: She met her boyfriend, Chris Convy, on the show, and they are working together on "Not Safe."

Glaser and Convy wanted to work together again, and an idea was born.

"I'm a curious pervert," Glaser says. "I love to talk about sex in all its varieties. We pitched this to Comedy Central, and it was great, because they wanted to work with me."

Being on Comedy Central has been "a perfect fit," Glaser says. "I love Amy Schumer and 'Broad City.' Those shows make me proud to be a woman."

Glaser hopes others will see her and be proud that she's open to talking about issues both funny and serious, from politics to fetishes to genital plastic surgery.

"I expose myself and have the guts to do it," she says. "I ask people to share, and they do, because I share everything."
