Name: Katie Shilcock
Business: TEP (The Environment Partnership)
Job title: Ecology manager
Website: www.tep.uk.com
Twelve months ago, Katie Shilcock became joint manager of TEP’s 30-strong ecology team, having already demonstrated her leadership skills in a four-person sustainable homes team, which merged into the larger ecology team.
Katie is a rising star because she has helped put in place a clear team structure, increased job satisfaction at all levels, and raised team turnover from £1.3m to £2.1m, while also increasing profitability and cash flow.
TEP is a multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy. One of our main services is to offer ecological advice and designs to developers and landowners who wish to implement sustainable development.
In the past year, the ecology team has carried out over 500 projects, often involving field surveys at dawn and dusk. This can be stressful and tiring, especially when reports are needed at short notice to meet customers’ deadlines. Katie has been cheerful and good-humoured throughout, maintaining team morale and customer service.
It is never easy merging teams and moving alongside an established and successful team manager, but Katie’s honesty, humour and vision have overcome any teething problems.
Katie is a reflective leader and adapted her management style to cope with the more chaotic environment of ecology work, where projects are highly vulnerable to weather and rapidly changing customer deadlines.
Nominated by Francis Hesketh, director at TEP.
