Rising fly infestations in Ireland could lead to potentially deadly infections

A rise in fly infestations in Ireland could lead to fatal illnesses, it has been warned.

Flies can spread E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter - which can potentially lead to deadly infections in humans.

And pest control provider Rentokil says Ireland should prepare for a fly-infested summer, after it recorded a 33% rise in callouts in the first three months of this year.

Spokesman Richard Faulkner said: "We expect to see fly infestations become more of a problem as we move into summer.

"Of all pests, flies are responsible for causing the highest number of illnesses, even more than rodents and cockroaches.

The most common stereotypes Irish people have about French people and what French people really think about us

"While these pests can be annoying, they can also present a serious health risk.

"Flies can pass diseases such as campylobacter, e.coli and salmonella on to people when they land on our food.

"A common sign of fly infestations to watch out for are fly faeces: clusters of small, dark spots around your premises."

Rentokil's tips to prevent fly infestations

  • Keep blinds and doors closed during hot weather
  • Clear food debris and liquid spillages immediately from under kitchen units and appliances.
  • Ensure all dustbins have tightly sealed lids.
  • Clean up after pets. Not only are faeces a perfect breeding place for flies, they may land there before landing on your food.
  • Always cover food so as not to attract flies but also to reduce the spread of diseases - flies spread diseases by landing on food before we eat it
  • Check your roof for old birds’ nests as they can be a source of flies, amongst other pests.
