Rising crime: In Amritsar, 3 murders in 24 hours

AMRITSAR: Three people, including a woman, were killed in three separate incidents of gun violence and strangulation in the past 24 hours in the holy city. The last incident occurred on Sunday morning, when Harinder Singh, 35, a resident of Ghanpur Kale, who had come from Dubai a week back, was shot dead by a masked robber while on his way to Golden Temple along with his family members.

According to police reports, when Harinder resisted the robbery bid, the criminals opened fire. Police have registered a case.

Amritsar police commissioner Arunpal Singh said they had arrested Satnam Kaur, wife of Harinder Singh, her paramour Arshdeep Singh and one Varinder Singh. Satnam Kaur had illicit relations with Arshdeep, which Harinder came to know upon his return from Dubai where he worked as driver for over 10 years. Satnam and Arshdeep gave Rs 2.7 lakh to Varinder to allegedly eliminate Harinder Singh.

In another case, the body of a woman grocer, Kamini Devi was found in her shop on Sunday. Geetanjali, a relative of late Kamini told media persons that her neighbours suspected that something was amiss when Kamini didn't open the shop on Sunday morning. Some of the neighbours and relatives forced open the door and found her body in the house.

Police sources said the burglars allegedly threw the household items helter-skelter before strangulating the woman. Police will get an autopsy done.

According to police, the scuffle between two groups occurred in the Sultanwind area, following which one Gurpartap Singh Raja was killed and Rishi Chaudhry sustained injured. The shots were allegedly fired by a person identified as Charandeep Singh.

He said as the tension between Raja and Charandeep escalated, he asked the SHO to send a police force.

Despite police presence, the heated argument soon led to a shootout, leaving Raja seriously injured. He died on way to the hospital.

Assistant sub-inspector Harbans Singh informed the media that Raja and Rishi were injured by a person who was identified as Charandeep. He informed that Raja had died while Rishi who had sustained injuries was under treatment. Police reportedly arrested Charandeep Singh Sunday. Meanwhile, the condition of Rishi is reported to be stable.
