Rishi Sunak's message for Leeds Covid heroes at Elland Road vaccination centre

Chancellor Rishi Sunak praised healthcare staff "heroes" as he met workers at the Elland Road mass vaccination centre during a virtual visit.

Mr Sunak spoke to workers at the Leeds vaccination centre in a video call this weekend, taking a virtual tour of the facility.

"Enormous thanks and huge congratulations for everything you’re doing. You guys are absolute heroes," the Richmond MP said.

One worker told the Chancellor the centre plans to roll out second doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in March.

And she said Elland Road will soon offer vaccines to two new risk groups: Cohort 5, made up of 65- to 69-year-olds, and Cohort 6, which covers under-65s who are at more risk.

"We're really excited," she told the Chancellor.

"We are absolutely ready to go Rishi."

“What’s the feeling like, how are people, are they excited, apprehensive?” Mr Sunak asked the staff.

Another worker replied: "We've got talking to them, and they were just saying 'I've literally not left the house in nearly 12 months and this couldn't come soon enough.'

"We couldn’t have been more happy to have this injection and move on and know that they can now eventually start getting on with their lives, which is the most important thing."

Mr Sunak was told the Elland Road centre had been prepared in just 10 days after vaccine staff first arrived.

"Wow. I’m in awe," he responded.

"I mean, they literally built all this from scratch. It’s amazing.

"You’re doing a stellar job and we’re all enormously proud and grateful, so thank you."

The Chancellor's virtual visit was one of many held by Government ministers today as part of the national vaccine rollout.

The Government is set to hit its UK-wide target of offering a Covid-19 vaccine to people most at risk by Monday, after England and Wales said those groups had been reached.

NHS England said the top four priority groups in England – people aged 70 and over, care home residents and staff, health and care workers and clinically extremely vulnerable patients – have now been offered the opportunity to be vaccinated.

But for those who have not taken up the offer, Professor Stephen Powis, NHS medical director said they “have not missed their chance” and urged them to come forward and make an appointment.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “It is so important that everyone aged 70 and over who hasn’t yet had a vaccination comes forward this weekend and contacts the NHS to book in their jab.

“Vaccines are the way out of this pandemic and it is testament to the strength of our Union and the combined power of our United Kingdom that we’ve seen such incredible progress in the rollout of our vaccination programme.”
