Rishi Sunak's lavish life and billionaire wife as he delivers Spring Statement

Rishi Sunak will today present his Spring Statement, with many hoping he will announce a raft of measures to help people deal with the UK's post-Covid inflation spike.

The Spring Statement is one of two annual financial statements that the chancellor makes. Though the statement doesn't typically see any big tax or spending decisions announced, things are different this year due to the mounting cost of living crisis.

Sunak is expected to announce measures such as a cut to fuel tax, as he faces increased pressure due to prices rising by 6.2% in the past year to February.

Ahead of the Chancellor revealing his statement to the House of Commons at 12:30pm on Wednesday, here's a look at his lavish life outside politics.

Sunak's private education

Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton in 1980 to a GP father and a mother who ran a local pharmacy, going on to attend the exclusive private school Winchester College.

In 2001, he graduated from Oxford's Lincoln College with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He then joined Goldman Sachs, later working for hedge fund The Children's Investment Fund Management. After that he co-founded an investment firm.

Previously Sunak has spoken of identity and upbringing to the BBC, saying: "I'd be at the temple at the weekend - I'm a Hindu - but I'd also be at [Southampton Football Club] the Saints game as well on a Saturday - you do everything, you do both."

When did Rishi Sunak join politics?

Sunak only entered the House of Commons in 2015, quickly rising in the ranks to take up the second biggest job in British politics.

As MP for the Richmond constituency in North Yorkshire, the 41-year-old took over from former Leader of the Opposition William Hague. Later, he was a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee and supported the UK leaving the European Union during the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Sunak landed his first junior ministerial role as the parliamentary under-secretary of state for local government, under Theresa May's leadership.

Sunak became Chancellor in February 2020 at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. He took over the role from current Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who had a falling out with the prime minister's team.

Who is Rishi Sunak married to?

Sunak has been married to Akshata Murthy since 2009, after the pair met while they both studied at the prestigious Stanford Business School.

Fashion entrepreneur Akshata, who is reportedly "richer than the Queen", is the daughter of NR Narayana Murthy, the sixth-richest man in India, and is estimated to be worth around £3.1 billion.

Sunak, who own several homes with his heiress wife, is estimated to be worth around £200 million himself. He also recently built a £400,000 leisure complex at his £2 million Yorkshire mansion.

Besides their £7 million five-bedroom mansion in Kensington - where they live with their two children - the couple are believed to own at least other four properties.
