Rishi Sunak's first 100 days as prime minister

After being confirmed as Britain's next prime minister on Monday, Rishi Sunak faces a key period in his premiership - the first 100 days. 

The former chancellor became the leader of the Conservative Party after Boris Johnson announced that he would not be angling for a return to No 10, before Penny Mordaunt then pulled out of the race at the last minute.

On Tuesday Mr Sunak met King Charles and was asked to form a government, and then give a speech to the nation. 

Tuesday 

Rishi Sunak travelled to Buckingham Palace for an audience with King Charles III, before delivering a statement on Downing Street to the country at around 11.35am. On Tuesday the new Prime Minister will appoint his first cabinet.

Wednesday

With barely 24 hours to prepare, Mr Sunak faced Sir Keir Starmer in the House of Commons for his first Prime Minister’s Questions.

Friday 

The statutory deadline for the resumption of powersharing in Northern Ireland. If an agreement cannot be reached, the Government must call an election.

October 31

Mr Sunak’s Chancellor of the Exchequer will deliver the Government’s “medium term fiscal plan”, which will set out spending plans until the next Budget.

October 31

By law ministers must lay new legal protections for water and air quality in the House of Commons.

November 3

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will meet to consider the UK’s base rate of interest.

November 8

Mr Sunak will look to the United States for the country’s midterm elections. 

Mid November 

A possible landing zone for the UK’s trade deal with India, which was originally intended to be concluded by Monday. 

November 15-16

Mr Sunak will travel to Bali for a meeting of the G20 - his first international summit as prime minister.

Late November

The Government’s Northern Ireland Protocol Bill will likely be involved in “ping pong” with the House of Lords. MPs are discussing forcing it through despite peers’ objections.

November - December

Negotiations between the UK and EU on the Northern Ireland Protocol will continue if an agreement cannot be reached by the Stormont powersharing deadline on Friday.

December 8

Mr Sunak will pass Liz Truss, who will become Britain's shortest-serving prime minister again.

December 15

The second MPC meeting of Mr Sunak’s tenure will assess the markets’ longer-term reaction to the medium-term fiscal plan.

Early January

The earliest possible beginning of the independent inquiry into the Government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, which will cast scrutiny onto Mr Sunak’s economic support measures.

January 21

Labour is likely to move the writ on a by-election in Chester, triggered by the resignation of Chris Matheson, by the end of January. It will be Mr Sunak’s first as prime minister.

Mid January 

Treasury officials may have concluded a review which will set the level of government support for consumers under its Energy Bills Support Scheme.

End of January

The Commons Privileges Committee is expected to have concluded its investigation into Boris Johnson, but the dates could shift as the inquiry picks up pace next month.
