'Rishi Sunak's a Tory show pony in £95 flip-flops on wrong side of prosperity for all'

If Tory show pony Rishi Sunak devoted as much time to the nation’s welfare as he does to his appearance in Treasury photos we would all be better off.

The shots of the Chancellor wearing £95 flip-flops and a very expensive top are unintentionally revealing, emphasising his distance from workers facing a cost-of-living crisis the Conservatives are making worse.

The privileged multi-millionaire married to a fabulously rich heiress cannot spin away the damage inflicted by his Universal Credit cuts, tax and National Insurance hikes and soaring prices for food, heating and fuel.

His twisted take on changes to the minimum wage and ending a public service pay freeze is unravelling fast because people are not stupid and can do their own sums.

He is a wealthy Thatcherite personally and ideologically on the wrong side of economic prosperity and fairness for all.

Clean up now

When 250,000 British babies a year are born in areas with dangerously polluted air, our Government needs to clean up its own act if it is to persuade the rest of the world to tackle environmental problems.

The kids identified by Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation risk developing serious conditions that would blight their lives.

We need to improve air quality now – or people will pay the ultimate price for Government complacency and inaction.

Reign it in

The Queen’s reluctant withdrawal from the Cop26 climate emergency summit in Glasgow next week is another reminder that she is 95.

No one can question her work ethic or her lifetime devotion to duty.

But when doctors recommend rest, everybody – including a hereditary monarch – should heed that medical advice.
