Rishi Sunak offers meal discount vouchers and VAT cut for hospitality industry to kickstart demand in the economy

RISHI Sunak is offering everyone £10 off restaurant meals in August to kickstart the economy.

The chancellor has announced an “eat out to help out” discount on restaurant bills for everyone in the country for the month of August.

He also cut VAT for tourism and hospitality industry to five per cent for the next six months in a  £4 billion catalyst for the hospitality sector

The VAT cut is being matched by a  multi-million discount voucher worth up to £10 per head for eating out from Monday to Wednesday throughout August.

Sunak said the measure has never been tried in this country and was part of his plan to kickstart the economy.

In addition every worker taken back from furlough in October will earn a £1,000 for their employer under a job retention bonus Sunak announced.

The jobs bonus was the main plank of the Tory chancellor’s plan to create work as the economy comes out of coronavirus lockdown.

Sunak warned “hardship lies ahead but no-one will be left without hope” as he announced an emergency package of measures to cope with the impact of coronavirus.

In what amounts to a mini-budget, the chancellor told MPs that the Government will do “all we can” to keep people in work.

As part of the spending splurge the Scottish government will receive £800 million through the Barnett formula as a result of chancellor's statement, according to Treasury documents.

In addition to the  £1,000 bonus for every employee taken back from furlough Sunak said:

* employers will be paid £1,000 to take on trainees and employers will be paid to create new apprenticeships for the next six months.

The Chancellor told MPs: “We’ll pay businesses to hire young apprentices, with a new payment of £2,000 - and we’ll introduce a brand new bonus for businesses to hire apprentices aged 25 and over, with a payment of £1,500.”

* Sunak said an extra £1 billion would be given to the Department for Work and Pensions to support people back into work.

* On green measures, the Chancellor announced a £2 billion “green homes grant” to help homeowners and landlords apply for vouchers to make their properties more energy efficient.

* Furlough will wind down flexibly and gradually until October

* Kickstart scheme for under-25s offering six months job placements subsidised by government

* An immediate cut stamp duty on house sales under £500,000 in England.

* The]Scottish government will receive £4.6 billion through the Barnett formula as a result of chancellor's statement, according to Treasury documents.
