Emmanuel Macron has welcomed Rishi Sunak to Paris for the first UK-France Summit in five years as James Cleverly denied claims of a "bromance" between the two leaders.
Mr Sunak and Mr Macron are meeting at the Elysee Palace to discuss a range of topics, with the small boats crisis expected to feature heavily in their discussions.
UK-France relations have undoubtedly improved since Mr Sunak became Prime Minister after a series of disputes between the two countries in recent years.
Mr Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary, was asked this morning if he believed there was now a new and better era for relations and he told GB News: "I don’t know if I would go as far as to describe it as a bromance but there is a very strong professional relationship between the UK and France. We don’t agree on everything but we agree on a lot."
Mr Cleverly added: "I am not going to predict exactly what agreements we will be able to settle on but I know that the French President, the Prime Minister, have a shared desire to address the issues that we are going to be discussing."
Downing Street has said Mr Sunak will use the summit to push for France to "go further" on joint efforts to prevent migrants crossing the Channel in small boats.
