'Rishi Sunak is the worst person to lead us through cost of living crisis he created'

Rishi Sunak has a bucket full of excuses for the dire state of our economy. It’s everyone else’s fault but his.

Sometimes he suggests it is all Liz Truss’s fault – and there he has a point, although I don’t remember him coming to the Commons once to condemn her crazy plans when she was PM.

But more importantly, even allowing for the 50 days of Truss, he’s been a Treasury minister or Prime Minister now for 1,323 days. And what have we had in that time?

It’s been crisis after crisis. So chaotic it brings chaos into disrepute.

Sunak loves talking about what how he’s ‘delivering’ for the British people. What drivel.

This is what he has delivered.

The highest peacetime national debt ever, the highest tax burden since the second world war, the highest core inflation since 1991, the fastest rise in interest rates since 1989 and the biggest fall in living standards on record.

And that’s without even mentioning the vast amounts of our money he squandered on the failed Eat Out to Help Out scheme or the dodgy PPE contracts.

So it really turns my stomach when I hear Sunak lecturing my constituents about holding their nerve.

He hasn’t the foggiest idea how offensive that is to people who are really struggling.

Yes, we’ve had low mortgage interest rates for a while. And yes, they were bound to go up at some point. But they have gone up so fast that many families simply can’t cope.

Coming on top of raging inflation – especially food inflation – this is dealing a body blow to many family finances.

So when Sunak, who didn’t know how to use a contactless card or fill a petrol tank, starts patronising them, it makes me and them angry.

Sunak looked deflated, flat, down, bored in Parliament.

But what I don’t think he’s quite twigged yet is that he is literally the worst person to lead this country through the cost of living crisis. After all, he created it.
