Rishi Sunak speech: UK government announces new Job Support Scheme from November

Rishi Sunak has outlined plans to keep employees in work if their hours are slashed.

Addressing MPs in the House of Commons, the Chancellor admitted it would not be possible to save all jobs, stating: “I said throughout this crisis that I can’t save every business, I can’t save every job, no Chancellor could do that.”

The chancellor says the furlough scheme will end because the support must "adapt and evolve".
He said no decision was harder but it is "fundamentally wrong" to keep people in unviable jobs.

He announced the government would provide support for employees by paying up to two thirds of wages for those who have their hours cut in a new 'Jobs Support Scheme'.

According to a HM Treasury graphic, an employee working 33% of their normal hours will receive at least 77% of their pay.

It will come into effect in November, and will be in place for six months.

The chancellor says he is also extending the scheme for self-employment on "similar terms" to the existing job support scheme.
