Rishi Kapoor dead: Bollywood star of Bobby and Karz dies aged 67

Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor has died in a hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai, after being admitted with breathing problems.

The 67-year-old was a member of the Kapoor family which has been a dominant force in the Hindi film industry.

Rishi made his name in 1973 film Bobby, which was his first lead role.

Randhir Kapoor had previously reassured fans after news spread that his brother Rishi had been rushed to hospital on Wednesday morning.

He told Press Trust of India at the time that there was no emergency and was hopeful that he will be "alright".

Randhir said: "He is in the hospital. He is suffering from cancer and he has some breathing problem, so he has been admitted to the hospital. He is stable now."

Rishi was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 had been treated New York for a year before returning to India in September last year.

He is the second high profile Bollywood death in as many days after Life Of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire star Irrfan Khan, passed away aged 53.

His film career began in 1970, when as a child actor he starred in his father Raj Kapoor's film, Mera Naam Joker.

Rishi went on to play the romantic lead on dozens of Bollywood films over the next 20 years.

He then transitioned to playing more character driven roles with his last role being in The Body in 2019.

Rishi was also involved in the pre-production of two other Bollywood movies at the time of his death.

As tributes poured in for the Bollywood legend, Rishi Kapoor's longtime friend and co-star Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: "He's gone. Rishi Kapoor, gone, just passed away. I am destroyed."
