Risen: Pioneering female-led electronic music festival announced for Hackney Wick

A new festival that aims to “help balance gender inequality across the electronic music world” with a line-up dedicated to those who “represent the feminine energy” is coming to east London.

Risen, which will take over 10 Hackney Wick venues on April 9, is a exciting outlier in a festival scene, both in London and the rest of the country, that has come under sustained criticism for its male-dominated line-ups.

In 2021, just 21 per cent of acts booked at major UK festivals were female or female-identifying, with that percentage falling as low as 10 per cent at south London event Wireless. And although many full line-ups are still yet to be confirmed for 2022, the male-heavy headline bookings at the likes of Download, Isle of Wight and Reading and Leeds festivals suggest major readjustments won’t be coming this year.

“Risen is a festival run by women to shine a light on the up and coming talent who work so tirelessly across the music industry, be that DJs, event managers, graphic designers, lighting techs and so on,” said Kitty Bartlett, senior booker and events manager at Risen. “It’s time for a new energy.”

With a dancefloor that is “open to all”, Risen will welcome acts from across the electronic music spectrum, covering house, disco, garage, techno and beyond. Among the performers will be DJs from Foundation FM, one of the capital’s leading online radio stations, Manchester favourite Madam X, London club regular Club Fitness and more. The full line-up is below.

Ticket prices are yet to be confirmed, but you can sign up for access to pre-sale tickets here to be the first to know.
