Rise in the number of people claiming Universal Credit in South Ayrshire

There’s been a rise in the number of people claiming Universal Credit in South Ayrshire, latest figures have revealed.

In the four weeks leading up to August 13 the number of people in the region claiming help with living costs increased by 174, or 1.7%, to 10,569.

Across Scotland the number of claimants rose by 1.6% to 473,973.

In the UK the number has increased by 2% to 5.6 million – an 86% increase since March 12, 2020.

Across Britain the number of claimants in the ‘Searching for Work’ regime increased by 3% to 2.3 million – 42% of the number of people on Universal Credit.

Minister for Employment Mims Davies MP said: “I recognise that the pandemic has been difficult for many people who are worried about their incomes and that’s why our £30bn Plan for Jobs is aimed at protecting, supporting and creating jobs.

“We’re creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs for young people through our £2billion Kickstart Scheme to give people a leg up onto the career ladder.”
