Rise in respiratory illness sees Irish blood supplies drop

The IBTS is calling on people to consider donating blood as supplies drop to critically low levels.

The national blood supply has fallen in recent times as hospitals face mounting pressures this winter. Some blood groups now retain just three days worth of stock, when the average is typically seven days.

Experts say that the high level of respiratory illness in Ireland has impacted the collection of blood. Although illnesses such as Covid-19 and RSV are starting to decline following their earlier spike, the strain on hospitals will remain in effect for weeks.

The IBTS is setting up additional clinics on 29 January ahead of the new public holiday. Blood donors in Dublin can attend the Green Isle Hotel in Clondalkin, while new donors can register their interest online.

Director of Donor Services Paul McKinney said: "Hospitals have been experiencing extreme pressures recently and there has been a sustained high demand for blood. In order to avoid putting further pressure on our hospital system, we need as many donors as possible to attend donation clinics over the coming days."

He asked donors who receive a text message from the IBTS to respond to the number provided and book an appointment where possible. He thanked donors for their support over the past few challenging months, following an earlier shortage last autumn.

Just 3% of the Irish population curently donate blood. The IBTS on average requires 3,000 units of blood each week to maintain the national blood supply.
