Rise in inflows: Two more gates of Hyderabad's Himayatsagar reservoir lifted

HYDERABAD: As the inflows kept increasing on Friday, too, officials of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), opened two more floodgates of the Himayatsagar reservoir. With this, seven of seventeen of the reservoir's gates were lifted in the span of three days.

To review inflows rising in twin reservoirs due to continuous rains from July 20, on Friday, Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) principal secretary, Arvind Kumar, along with HMWS&SB managing director, M Dana Kishore visited twin reservoirs (Osmansagar and Himayatsagar).

The Water Board officials who are ascertaining levels of these reservoirs, are discharging flood water by opening floodgates in a phased manner. “Few more gates are also planning to open, but based on the flows into the reservoirs,” according to a senior HMWS&SB official told TOI.

On Friday morning, the inflow in Himayatsagar started at 1,400 cusecs and is still continuing and in Osmansagar, 400 cusecs inflows were arriving. Recorded water level in Himayatsagar was, 1762 feet against its FTL, 1763-feet.

Locals who noticed floodgates of twin reservoirs, opened and thronged to visit the water bodies, but officials restricted the entry and closed the reservoirs’ gates, soon after floodgates were opened.

Meanwhile, the HMWS&SB officials are planning to draw additional quantities of water from Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs, after water levels rise.

Currently, the water board is drawing a total of 14 million gallons of water from the twin reservoirs, to meet Hyderabad city’s demand.
