Rise in coronavirus cases as 123 positive tests overnight in Scotland

There were 123 new cases of coronavirus in Scotland registered in the last 24 hours.

It takes the total number of positive cases to 20,318 - after a spike of 88 the previous day.

There have been no new deaths meaning the total number of deaths in Scotland remains at 2,494.

The number of patients with coronavirus being treated in hospital stands at 251 - with five in intensive care.

The announcement was made online this after on the Scottish Government website.

Earlier today, Aberdeen's only major gay club, Cheerz, announced it will close over the coronavirus music ban.

Nicola Sturgeon said last week workers must not be "intimidated" into returning to offices before their safety can be assured.

And police chiefs warned rank and file officers against complacency over wearing face masks.

It was confirmed last week Scotland will remain in phase three of restrictions but announced gyms will reopen ahead of schedule as of August 31, with strict hygiene measures in place.

Police will also have new powers to break up house parties exceeding the limit of eight people from three different households.

Aberdeen was recently given the green light to start lifting local lockdown restrictions after a spike linked to the city's nightlife.

Businesses can reopen today and Granite City residents can travel more than five miles again for recreation.

A ban on visiting each other indoors has also been lifted and further restrictions will be eased on Wedesday.

Contact team sports can resume outdoors as of today, and bingo halls will be able to reopen as well.
