Ripple Is Set To Unlock 1 Billion XRP On August 1. Most Of The Tokens Are Expected To Return To Escrow

Ripple is preparing for its next scheduled XRP escrow release, with 1 billion XRP set to become available on Aug. 1 under the company's longstanding token management program.

Ripple's escrow mechanism automatically unlocks up to 1 billion XRP on the first day of each month through a series of smart contracts on the XRP Ledger. The company has followed the same process since establishing the program in 2017 to provide greater transparency around XRP's supply management, according to Finbold.

While the headline figure is substantial, previous releases have typically resulted in only a fraction of the unlocked tokens entering circulation. Ripple has consistently re-escrowed the majority of the monthly allocation, using a portion for liquidity operations, ecosystem development, and institutional partnerships, according to Finbold.

At present, XRP has an estimated circulating supply of approximately 65 billion tokens out of its maximum supply of 100 billion. The remaining balance is largely held in escrow accounts that continue to release tokens on a predetermined schedule extending years into the future, according to Ripple's official escrow documentation.

Ripple has historically re-locked between 600 million and 800 million XRP following monthly unlocks. Several escrow events during 2026, including those in January, May, June, and July, produced limited immediate price volatility, with XRP largely trading in line with broader cryptocurrency market movements, according to CryptoSlate.

The escrow system was introduced in December 2017, when Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into cryptographically secured escrow accounts to address concerns about token supply and market transparency. Each month, one escrow contract expires and releases tokens to Ripple, while unused balances are typically placed into new escrow arrangements with later release dates, according to Ripple.

XRP was trading at approximately $1.14 on Tuesday, up about 4% over the previous 24 hours, according to pricing data cited by Finbold. The token has traded within a relatively narrow range in recent weeks alongside broader movements across the cryptocurrency market.

The scheduled unlock comes amid increased attention on Ripple's broader business operations. Earlier this year, the company continued expanding its payments network and institutional offerings, while the cryptocurrency industry has benefited from a more defined regulatory environment in several jurisdictions.

In the United States, lawmakers have continued debating digital asset legislation, including measures involving market structure and stablecoins. Separately, Ripple's years-long legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has moved closer to resolution following a series of court rulings over the past several years, according to Reuters.

Market participants have generally viewed XRP escrow releases as routine events due to their predictable nature. The amount of XRP remaining in escrow has gradually declined over time and is estimated to stand at roughly 38 billion tokens.

Ripple has maintained that the escrow mechanism is intended to provide transparency and predictability for XRP holders and institutional partners. The company's monthly token releases remain among the most closely watched recurring events in the cryptocurrency market due to the size of the allocations and XRP's position among the industry's largest digital assets.
