Ripe for the picking

People browse for hozuki Japanese lantern plants at Sensoji temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, on Tuesday, the start of the two-day Hozuki-Ichi fair. The temple was crowded with visitors and about 100 stalls selling the bright orange plants for the annual market, which dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867). "I bought a hardy hozuki as an offering for the deceased, and also prayed for the health of my family," said a 55-year-old visiting from Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture.
