RIP Gotham Town: £3 trebles are no more as beloved Newcastle bar shuts

It's time at the bar for Gotham Town.

The Newcastle city centre late bar, beloved by many for its cheap trebles, is no more.

On Facebook , the curtain was brought down on Wednesday with a simple post which read "The End" and fans are grieving.

"Gotham was always my dirty trebles bar," said one, who said they were in shock by the closure.

And it is a shock, as the Neville Street nightspot has batted off every trend since opening in the early 90s.

Craft beer, the Quayside and The Diamond Strip all came but the venue - perfectly located opposite Central Station - always found an audience, often kitted out in the tightest jeans Topman sold.

And it stuck to a simple winning formula of cheap booze and quality tunes to keep them coming in.

Be it a treble or a can of Red Stripe, come Saturday night there was always a group of lads dancing in a circle to be found or someone desperately trying not to have to use 'those' loos.

"It was close to a lot of people," admitted Daniel Flounders.

He's from parent company Crafted Projects, which is now measuring up the unit's next step.

But for now, like thousands of Geordies this weekend, he will be raising a glass to Gotham Town.

"It has been a big part of people growing up," he admitted.

Opening in the very early 90s, it was initially soundtracked by the likes of the Charlatans, The Stone Roses and the Inspiral Carpets.

Over the years, Oasis, the Arctic Monkeys and The Courteeners would be added to the playlist - but the vibe never really changed.

Although the plans for the site are unclear, Crafted Projects say the site remains "perfect" for a bar.

And the firm has had a lot of success with other ventures nearby such as Central Oven and Shaker.

As such, it is unlikely to return it to the style of Gotham, which once hit headlines for selling £5 sex toys in its subterranean toilets.

But Daniel adds: "I will remember it for good times , good fun - and cheap drinks."
