The fire was extinguished by 1.37am after firefighters wearing breathing apparatus managed to gain entry to the flat, where the body of a man, named locally as Gordon, was discovered.

A joint investigation between Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police was carried out and determined the fire started in the bedroom of the flat.
