'Riot-like' scenes in Clayton with man seriously injured after being attacked with weapons and 'pitchfork' through car window

A man has suffered serious injuries after being attacked with weapons through the window of his car.

Neighbours on Stanton Street, in Clayton, said they saw what looked like a "riot" before police arrived to the scene on Tuesday evening.

A group of men in cars surrounded another car parked on the street at around 7.30pm.

They then got of their vehicles and brandished weapons through the car window, injuring the 27-year-old driver. 

The group then fled from the scene in the cars they arrived in.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition, police said.

No arrests have been made and police continue to investigate.

One eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she saw one of the attackers carrying a pitchfork.

She said: "At first I thought a bomb had gone off. I could hear screaming, yelling and smashing.

"I ran to the front door, when I got out there were three cars in the road at different angles.

"There were around 15 to 20 people. They were all attacking each other.

"Someone had a pitchfork they were stabbing people with.

"It was absolutely terrifying. Two cars then drove off before police arrived.

"It looked like there was a riot. There were so many people. The road is full of glass."

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 7.30pm on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, police were called to reports of a serious assault on Stanton Street, Manchester.

"Enquiries have established that a group of men arrived in a number of cars, surrounding a further car. 

"Upon exiting the cars - brandishing weapons - the men proceeded to assault a 27-year old man through the window of his car before making off in the same cars they arrived in.

"Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries where he remains in a stable condition.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
