Rioja restaurant in Finnieston announces reopening date under new Michelin-starred chef

The west end’s new-look Rioja restaurant under a Spanish Michelin-starred chef has announced its reopening date for next week.

Famed Catalan chef Miguel Angel Major will spearhead the new look restaurant concept in Finnieston, which opens on Monday (July 12).

The chef, who previously worked at the world-famous El Bulli, received his first Michelin star in 2017 at Sucede in Valencia, with the goal of reviving history through fusion and haute cuisine. Glasgow's Rioja marks his first UK appointment in his culinary career.

The venue has also offered a first look at its changing menu.

Offering traditional Spanish tapas staples, alongside Chef Miguel's modern creations, the menu links the Scottish produce to the history of Spanish cuisine with one-of-a-kind celebration of flavours.

Rioja has said it will keep its focus on tapas dining, but with a “sense of fun and mischief”.

The a la carte menu features a choice of tapas, starters, mains and desserts and will be available for lunch and dinner Monday - Sunday.

Sample dishes from the menu include canapé de pollo pulpo (crispy chicken skin, fresh Galician octopus, parsley gel, and baby shard; venison tartar de cerdo ahumado (home smoked venison tartare, raw quail egg and radish); croquetas de cocido (béchamel, cured Iberian ham, chicken thigh, trio of stocks); mejillones a la brasa (barbequed fresh mussels from Mull, white wine, and chives); and gambas al ajillo con pizza aerea (described as a “Spanish classic deconstructed”).

Chef Miguel Angel Mayor said: "Our food will reflect the evolution of taste. An ever changing menu that celebrates the finest of Scottish and Iberian produce paired with innovative techniques, Spanish gastronomy, creativity and the occasional surprise".
