Rio Ferdinand would have screamed at Bruno Fernandes over cheap mistakes vs West Brom

Rio Ferdinand has hit out at the lack of leaders at Manchester United, claiming he would have screamed at Bruno Fernandes over the sloppy mistakes he made against West Brom at the weekend.

United were below par on Saturday night as they missed a host of chances and were careless in possession in their 1-0 win.

Fernandes did make six key passes against the Baggies, which was the highest number made by a player in Europe's top five leagues this season but was also guilty of giving the ball away at times.

While there is little doubt over Fernandes' importance for United, Ferdinand says he would like to see more accountability from the players around him.

But the ex-United defender believes the United squad is short on leaders.

"It’s not just about Ole on the sidelines, or Phelan, or Michael Carrick, sometimes you need a player," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"Before half-time, Bruno, who you don’t mind giving the ball away because of the creative spark but he gave the ball away very cheaply, probably four times before half-time.

"I’m sitting there looking around the team thinking, ‘Who’s gonna be on to him?’, I would’ve been screaming.

"I don’t understand why no-one was on to him. I don’t think they are (leaders), I’ve got to be honest. They’re not leaders, if you’re being brutal, I don’t think any of them have shown any signs of being leaders.

"Maybe Bruno, he’s taken the responsibility in interviews and stuff and on the pitch, you can see it.

"I don’t see anybody who is gonna ruffle feathers, or pull someone to the side, and say: ‘Listen, you’ve given the ball away cheaply the last four times, sort yourself out’ - not as nice as that.

"Having no fans in the stadium - we hate it - but it has opened my eyes to seeing there aren’t many leaders that are playing football at the moment and Man United are suffering from that.”
