Rio Ferdinand wants Sheffield United to get promotion ahead of former club Leeds

Former Leeds captain Rio Ferdinand wants Sheffield United to get automatic promotion.

The Blades can all but secure their return to the Premier League if they beat Ipswich at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening.

Leeds face a tricky clash with Aston Villa on Sunday and even if Sheffield United do slip up, they have it all to do to make the top two.

Marcelo Bielsa's men have enjoyed an excellent season but saw their fate slip out of their own hands with back-to-back defeats over Easter to Brentford and Wigan.

The play-offs look to be their best bet and Ferdinand admits he would rather Sheffield United make the top two, likely with Norwich.

Chris Wilder opens up on rise from park football to the cusp of the Premier League

"I'd love to see Leeds in the Premier League. Their fan base, the passion they've got, they'd be a great addition," he told JOE.

"It's where they should be. I had a great time there, so it'd be fantastic for me to see them there.

"I'd like them to go up through the play-offs, because my mate (Chris Wilder) is the manager of Sheffield United so I'd like him to go up, but Leeds to go up through the play-offs."

Marcelo Bielsa responds to questions he may quit if Leeds fail to win promotion

Ferdinand, 40, spent just two seasons at Elland Road but captained Leeds during that time.

He arrived from West Ham in a club-record £18m deal and helped Leeds reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in his first full season.

But Leeds were forced to cash in on their prized asset in the summer of 2002 due to financial problems as Ferdinand joined Manchester United , where he would play for over a decade.
