Rio Ferdinand urges Gareth Southgate to give Man City ace Phil Foden an England chance

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has named the Manchester City starlet he wants to see earn an opportunity with England.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has earned praise for handing chances to young players, with Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and West Ham’s Declan Rice both earning their debuts in Friday’s 5-0 drubbing of the Czech Republic.

Hudson-Odoi is now tipped to start for England against Montenegro this evening, with Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho expected to miss out through injury, and Ferdinand wants the trend to continue.

The former defender has highlighted two young talents he wants to see earn an call-up to England’s senior squad, picking out City ’s Phil Foden and Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson.

Foden is representing England under-21s and starred in their match against Poland last week.

Man City forward Raheem Sterling subject of Gareth Southgate England captaincy claim

"Southgate gets it, the excitement and pride it gives to fans to see young players in their team. There’s huge potential there,” Ferdinand told the Sun.

"As well as Hudson-Odoi and Sancho, I want to see Phil Foden play. Everyone’s talking about him. Same with Reiss Nelson."

Eighteen-year-old Foden has made 22 appearances across all competitions this season, seven as a starter, and has scored six goals in the process - with his latest effort coming in City’s 7-0 mauling of Schalke in the Champions League.
