Rio Ferdinand tells Thomas Tuchel what he must do to reach level of Chelsea and Man Utd greats

Things can't have gone much better for Thomas Tuchel and his squad since February.

Claiming a Champions League title, cementing a place in the top four and topping it off with the UEFA Super Cup is a stellar record for someone who hasn't even been in the job a year.

Now, the Blues reach a pivotal moment.

A young team has repeated the efforts of legends like Frank Lampard on John Terry by earning European glory, but still have some catching up to do domestically.

Rio Ferdinand believes they have to repeat last season's efforts to reach the same calibre of what has come before.

He said on BT Sport: “I think it will be very similar for these guys. I used to walk around the corridors at the training ground at Manchester United and you’d see Bobby Charlton, you’d see Bryan Robson, you’d see all these greats of the game. Even in the changing room with Ryan Giggs etc. and when you haven’t won anything, you feel a bit inferior.

"I’m sure the guys will be feeling the same, when they see a Frank Lampard, a John Terry, a Joe Cole, walking around the training ground or the stadium, there will be an inferiority complex. But now, they’ve won the Champions League, to get on those guys levels I’ve mentioned at Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, they have to do it again and repeat it."

Tuchel may just be up to the challenge, and was asked about the prospect of backing up his opening months as Chelsea boss.

Ahead of the Super Cup he said: "I can understand your point but it doesn’t feel like pressure because this is what we demand of ourselves, me at the very first point. I demand to get better every day, use my experience and to be the best coach I can be every single day.

"I want to lead by example to come into Cobham with a good mood and energy and ready to continue the journey together. It is not over, it has just started and, hopefully, it will be a long journey.

"The courage now is to face the challenge, does anybody have a recipe how to do better after a Champions League victory? I don’t know, it was my first win so I think the courage is to face the challenges, step up and keep on demanding.

"We have some things we need to develop and improve, there were things that were very strong last season and we have to maintain that level.

"We have to, clearly, rebuild the same spirit that put us in the position to get these results. There are a lot of different tasks to fulfil and the most important is that we don't lose sight by thinking too much about pressure and expectations.

"It is an everyday process and if you take care with it, you don’t get too distracted and it doesn’t get complicated."
