Rio Ferdinand tells Manchester United why formation was wrong vs RB Leipzig

Rio Ferdinand said Manchester United's slow start cost them against RB Leipzig after they were eliminated from the Champions League.

After winning three of their first four group-stage matches United only required a point from their final two games, but lost to PSG last week and were beaten in Germany despite a late fightback.

Assessing United's performance against Julian Nagelsmann's side, Ferdinand made it clear that United only have themselves to blame for their early exit.

“When you start the way they did - they took two goals before they even took a breath. If that happens in a game of this importance, then you’ve only got yourselves to blame," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"Listen, they know how important this game would’ve been when they went into it and we said before the game, you’ve got to start right, don’t concede early on, get yourselves through the first 15 minutes. They didn’t even have a chance to do that because they weren’t at it from the beginning."

Ferdinand also questioned the logic behind United playing with a back three in the first half.

Ferdinand said: “The difference is when they’ve played three at the back before, the other team’s strikers have played up against them, so you know exactly where you are. It’s me against you, etc, but this team, the way Nagelsmann set them up - people were asking questions.

"Do I go over there and mark him or not? You’ve got Aaron Wan Bissaka, he had no-one up against him. Scholesy said it first - change two players now. Change from three at the back definitely and go to a four, so you’ve got an extra man in midfield.

"He (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer) didn’t do it, and he waited until half-time even to make a substitution but it was too late.”
