Rio Ferdinand says Bruno Fernandes needs to play deeper for Manchester United.
The former United defender believes improvements can be made after they ended last season having finished in the top four but gone out of three cup competitions at the semi-final stage.
One talking point is how United can get the best out of a midfield that includes the likes of Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Ferdinand said it is a case of getting Fernandes to drop deeper whilst full-backs push forward.
He said: "I watched the Palace game the other day and thought Bruno probably played too high. I like him facing the game and picking the passes here and there.
"Again, I think Man United have got to utilise the full-backs a little bit more as well in attacking areas.
"I think they are fundamental in the way teams play these days. If Man United have more strings to their bow I think that’s an area in which improvement can definitely happen."
United ended last season on a high thanks to their good form but their momentum was checked by losing their first Premier League game of the season.
Ferdinand believes they have improved from where they were when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over but more is needed.
He said: "It is progress from where they were, but I think there’s still room for improvement. Ole knows that and would admit that quite openly.
"I just see a common theme with the team in terms of big moments, I think in central defensive areas we have let ourselves down and that’s a key area for me as I was a centre-back and I look at that with interest.
"I feel there is improvement and the club are trying their best to do that.
"Jadon Sancho hasn’t gone through yet but I still believe if they just signed Jadon Sancho this season they would still have the same problems as last season."
