The former England football star Rio Ferdinand has been hit with a six-month driving ban.

The ex-Manchester United defender, now a football pundit, was caught doing 85 miles per hour on the A27 dual carriageway in Hangleton, near Hove, on England's south coast on July 22 last year.

Dual carriageways have a speed limit of 70 miles per hour. Mr Ferdinand was banned from driving for six months and ordered to pay £822 in fines and costs, court officials said.

Mr Ferdinand, who attended the hearing at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday in person, was previously caught speeding along a stretch of road in Manchester three times in 2012.

He was slapped with a six-month ban for those offences, despite an argument from his lawyer Nick Freeman - nicknamed “Mr Loophole" - that he should only receive a shorter discretionary suspension.

Earlier this summer Mr Ferdinand, 41, and his wife Kate Wright revealed they are expecting their first child together.

He has been in a relationship with the former The Only Way Is Essex star, 29, since 2017, following the death of his wife Rebecca in 2015 at the age of 34 after she was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time.

Mr Ferdinand has three children from his previous marriage - Tate, Lorenz and Tia.

Mr Ferdinand and Ms Wright’s relationship was the focus of a BBC documentary which aired earlier this year. Rio And Kate: Becoming A Stepfamily explored the challenges Ms Wright dealt with in being both a partner to Mr Ferdinand and a new stepmother to three grieving children.

Mr Ferdinand played nearly 800 games for West Ham, Bournemouth, Leeds, Manchester United, Queens Park Rangers and England - and was considered one of the best defenders of his generation.

Since retiring in 2015 he has been a television pundit for BT Sport.
