Rio Ferdinand slams 'powder puff' Arsenal following latest defensive mishaps

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has slammed Arsenal following another uninspiring defeat.

Following a forgettable result against Wolves, where red cards to David Luiz and Bernd Leno proved to be costly as Arsenal threw a 1-0 lead away, another defeat was suffered against Aston Villa.

Cedric Soares' poor pass to Gabriel Magalhaes was pounced upon by Bertrand Traore inside the opening two minutes, with Ollie Watkins tucking home the resulting pass to heap more misery upon Mikel Arteta's side following a brace at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season.

Those two results have brought Arsenal's impressive unbeaten run to a halt, damaging any outside chances of securing European qualification.

That has seen criticism directed at Arsenal once again and Ferdinand has not held back, slamming the Gunners for their mistake and inability to fight back from behind.

"Powder puff today. They started off on the worst possible footing, mistake, lack of concentration and they definitely didn’t recover for the rest of the first half," he told BT Sport.

"Second half they were much improved but without that cutting edge. They didn’t have that cutting edge. The attacking players that have been doing really well for them in recent weeks, today they just didn’t turn up."

Arsenal now have a rare week off before hosting Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium next weekend, which starts a run of five games in 14 days.

That sequence of fixtures also includes the return of the Europa League, where the Gunners battle Benfica in the Round of 32 stage.
