Rio Ferdinand slams ex-West Ham keeper Adrian for Liverpool horror show vs Atletico Madrid

Rio Ferdinand has hammered former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, who endured a horror night for Liverpool as they were dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool led 2-1 on aggregate after going 2-0 up on the night thanks to goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino but suffered two quickfire blows in the first-half of extra-time.

Adrian was at fault after a poor clearance led to Marcos Llorente's opening goal, while the goalkeeper also failed to deal with the midfielder's second effort from outside the box.

This shocked Liverpool who had bags of pressure in extra-time before Alvaro Morata hit the winner late on for the Spanish side to win 3-2 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

Ferdinand was on punditry duties in the BT Sport studio for the clash and was quick to criticise Adrian following the contest.

"Atletico were composed, they put in a shift, and then they had the cutting edge when they needed it, it just wasn’t to be for Liverpool, they had the chances," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"But it’s gone back to what we have spoken about before with Liverpool, 18 months ago to two years, if you’ve not got a top goalkeeper in goal, you get punished and that’s what has happened today. They’ve had those experiences in the past and it’s come to rear its head again."
