Rio Ferdinand sets Kevin De Bruyne challenge at Man City

Rio Ferdinand said Kevin De Bruyne must win the Champions League to be considered one of the greatest midfielders of all time.

The Manchester City star has enjoyed a phenomenal season despite the club missing out on the Premier League title.

The Belgian playmaker equalled Thierry Henry's Premier League record of 20 assists in a single season, whilst earning a place in the PFA Team of the Season and a nomination for the individual award too.

With two league title under his belt, alongside four Carabao Cups and an FA Cup winner's medal, the one trophy that has eluded De Bruyne is the Champions League.

“I think he needs to (win the Champions League)," Ferdinand said prior to City's win over Real Madrid. "In terms of assists, he’s equalled the record set by Thierry Henry.

"What he does is so, so easy on the eye. His crossing is as good as anyone in football. His actual final pass is frightening. He can shoot either foot and he can move.

"There's an intensity to him as well. You look at him, he's a little bit baby-faced but there's an intensity to him and a little bit of needle to him sometimes.

"Coming off the pitch, arguing with older players, demanding off other people if the ball doesn't come at the right pace he will give it to people, which I love."
