Rio Ferdinand sends Raheem Sterling message to Manchester United wide players after Wolves draw

Rio Ferdinand has sent a Raheem Sterling message to Manchester United 's wide players after the FA Cup draw at Wolves.

The Reds were held by Wolves at Molineux this evening as they struggled to break down the opposition defence.

Ferdinand has explained that part of United's problem was a lack of awareness from their forwards to get into promising positions in front of goal.

The former United defender looked at one particular moment in the second half when analysing where his old side went wrong.

Daniel James had the ball wide left in the replay and was looking to put the ball in the box but Tahith Chong was hanging at the back post rather than gambling near post for the cross, with Ferdinand explaining that this is a part of the game which all of United's wide players must improve.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: "I thought Wolves were very compact but if you look at wide men in the game at the moment, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah scored 82 goals between them since the beginning of last season. Raheem Sterling has 46 in the same period of time.

"If you are a wide man now you have got to be looking to get across the defenders and get in the box.

"At one point United were in transition and Daniel James got the ball out wide. You need someone like Chong in that instance to get across people and in behind people.

"You score goals a lot of the time within that penalty area and around the penalty box. You have got to make yourself available in those areas.

"If you are hanging out on the back post, you're giving the defender the advantage."
