Rio Ferdinand sends message to Harry Maguire over Man Utd captaincy

Rio Ferdinand has encouraged Harry Maguire to grab a hold of some of his Manchester United team-mates as he questions the leadership within the dressing room.

The Red Devils were second best as Arsenal dealt them a third home Premier League defeat this season on Sunday.

It came after several impressive displays from United, notably in Europe where they've seen off PSG and RB Leipzig.

But Maguire conceded after their Arsenal defeat that they were perhaps overly confident before entertaining the Gunners.

And Ferdinand has urged the world's most expensive defender to remind the dressing room of the work that still needs to be done.

"We're lacking confidence in certain areas, we gain a bit of confidence in midweek but do they get too confident?," he said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube channel.

"I saw Maguire saying they we're patting each other on the back too much. Get a hold of that team - he's the captain.

"I hope he's getting in there and telling people 'listen, we aren't the finished article, we've got loads to do, pull your socks up'.

"I don't know if thats going on. The captain of Man Utd. There's always been leaders in that dressing room pulling people aside to make sure they stay on their hame.

Rio Ferdinand has challenged the defender to be more vocal in the dressing room (BT Sport)

"I remember chatting to Nani, it was two or three words ' 'assists and goals' or 'shoot on sight.' Boom, that's it. It doesn't need essays. Sometimes its short and sharp.

"Are these conversations going on? It isn't just for the management to deal with that, sometimes the players need to stand up and put it on people."

Ferdinand was part of the United side that last won the Premier League in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Since then though the club's demise has been well documented and they currently languish in 15th place.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dismissed their home form as a concern whilst fans remain unable to attend games.
