Rio Ferdinand sends Liverpool transfer message over 'exhilarating' Pedri

Rio Ferdinand has raved about reported Liverpool target Pedri after the Barcelona wonderkid shone at Euro 2020.

The 18-year-old lit up the tournament for Spain, who were knocked out by Italy in the semi-finals, earning comparisons to legendary former midfielder Andres Iniesta.

“No one has ever seen that from anybody at the age of 18,” said Spain boss Luis Enrique after the defeat to Italy earlier this week. “Not even Sir Andres Iniesta.”

Liverpool are reportedly ready to captalise on Pedri’s contract situation at Barcelona with the youngster heading into the final year of his deal.

Nou Camp chiefs are yet to agree a new contract with Pedri and would accept around £70million for the player, if reports are to be believed.

That would be a staggering fee for a teenager but former England and Manchester United defender Ferdinand has no doubt about Pedri’s talents.

“Pedri has been exhilarating at times with his vision and passing,” said Ferdinand.

“The way he receives the ball all the time. His head is up. Receiving it on the half-turn, it comes so naturally to him.

“He seems to have that natural ability and awareness where people are. The running is good. But the little bits of skill here and there separates him.

“Tight areas ‘give it to me, I don’t care because I can get out and I can probably put it through your legs as well. Not a problem’. Great player to watch.”
