Rio Ferdinand's surprising prediction on who will win the Champions League

And then there was six in the Champions League.

Tuesday night's quarter-final second legs saw Manchester United and Juventus exit the competition, the former unsurprisingly to Barcelona and the latter in a shock loss to Ajax.

Lionel Messi's brace and a stunning Philippe Coutinho effort did for United, who lost 3-0 on the night at the Nou Camp and 4-0 on aggregate.

Juve, meanwhile, looked as though they were going to advance to the last four as expected in Turin when Cristiano Ronaldo headed them into a first half lead to put them 2-1 up on aggregate.

But Ajax stormed back and followed up their win over Real Madrid in the previous round with a 3-2 aggregate success thanks to goals from Donny van de Beek and Matthijs de Ligt.

Wednesday's semi-final second legs will see Manchester City and Tottenham lock horns again with Spurs 1-0 up from the first clash at their new stadium, with Liverpool go to Porto 2-0 up from the Anfield first leg.

Assessing the situation in the BT Sport studio after the United loss, presenter Gary Lineker asked pundit Rio Ferdinand who he sees as the winners of the competition now there are just six teams left.

Ferdinand said that he thought there would be an English winner this year, and then when Lineker pressed him to make a choice the ex-Manchester United defender said: "Liverpool."

Reds fans on Twitter were a little taken aback that someone who played for their rivals plumped for them, but obviously they agreed with him.

Will he be right?
