Rio Ferdinand's son opens up about seeing his dad with 'lots of beers' after his mum died

Rio Ferdinand's eldest son Lorenz opened up about seeing his dad with "lots of beers" after the death of his mum Rebecca.

The former footballer lost his wife to breast cancer in 2015 and in 2017 reality star Kate Wright stepped in to become step-mum to his three children.

During their new BBC documentary Rio and Kate: Becoming A Step Family, the Ferdinand family discuss the difficulties they faced as they came to terms with late Rebecca's tragic death.

Speaking about the aftermath of his mum's death and the impact it had on his dad, Lorenz said: "Whenever I used to come downstairs I used to see loads of beers on the side. I thought it was just like normal.

"And then when Kate started coming along it started getting a bit happier. Kate's just like brightened the mood sort of thing. Because there's a lady figure in the house it makes it an enjoyable atmosphere to be in.

Rio's daughter Tia called Kate her "mum" as they visited her mother's grave. In the documentary they were at the resting place of the footballer's late wife.

As they laid down flowers and took time to reflect, eight-year-old Tia referred to Kate as her mother.

"Mum are we releasing the balloons?" she asked as they visited the grave.

Her big brother Lorenz explained that because Tia was only little when she lost her mum she has gotten used to calling Kate mum since she joined the family two years ago.

He said: "Tia she's never really had a mum. Sometimes I used to think this as well, it's gonna be weird not saying mum ever again.

"But then Tia in a way she didn't really know mum, do you know what I mean?

"Calling her mum might be a natural thing."
