Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Juventus' main focus was to stop Romelu Lukaku from doing what he does best after the Italian side ran out 1-0 winners in Turin.
Federico Chiesa's strike just after half-time proved to be the difference on the night as Chelsea suffered their second straight defeat following the narrow loss against Manchester City.
It was a professional performance from the hosts, who kept Lukaku relatively quiet throughout the game and limited him to few clear-cut opportunities.
His best chance came in the 82nd minute after he got on the end of Ross Barkley's pass and rolled his marker but was unable to keep his effort on target.
Although the Blues dominated possession, Juventus did well to nullify the Belgian's threat, with Matthijs de Ligt and Leonardo Bonnuci at the heart of it.
Lukaku scored once in two appearances against Max Allegri's side while at Inter Milan last season and it was clear they had a game plan to stop him.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand explained the conversations centre-backs would have ahead of the game in trying to stop a striker such as Lukaku.
Speaking on BT Sport before the game, he said: "With their mindset on this game they would be thinking about one player and one player only, that would’ve been Lukaku.
"This is the way not to defend Lukaku - getting too tight. His physicality is one of his main strengths and the moment he feels you on the pitch that’s when he rolls you. He’s stronger, more powerful than you.
"You have to give yourself a yard and if he wants to roll, you push off, you send Lukaku back where the ball came from.
"The moment you get too tight, you’re out the game. The moment you get tight before the ball comes, he rolls you and you’re out of the game, he’s too strong."
De Ligt and Chiesa have both been recently linked with a move to Chelsea and they didn't do themselves any harm at all with their performances.
It is, however, a disappointing result for Chelsea who are beaten for the first time in the Champions League since lifting the trophy back in May.
