Rio Ferdinand reminds Manchester United they ignored summer transfer advice over Thomas Partey

Rio Ferdinand has reminded Manchester United they didn't act on his advice to sign Thomas Partey during the summer transfer window.

Partey played a starring role for Arsenal in their win at Old Trafford on Sunday, prompting former United captain Roy Keane to liken the Ghanaian to Arsenal great Patrick Vieira.

United neglected to sign a defensive midfielder over the summer, instead signing left-back Alex Telles and four attack-minded players in Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo.

Arsenal triggered Partey's release clause at Atletico Madrid and he already looks like money well spent.

Ferdinand said on YouTube: "Partey, I said a while ago back in April... before that even, when I was talking about who Man United should buy - that was my guy."

Earlier in the year, Ferdinand said: "I would maybe go and get Partey from Atletico Madrid or Ndidi from Leicester."

On United's loss to Arsenal in general, the former England skipper added: "You have to give massive credit to Arteta, the way his team set up.

"They absolutely pressured Man United, they pinned them back and said, 'we don't need to have the ball - we're going to control this game without the ball, we'll pin you back and you make the mistakes and we'll feed off that.' Yeah they didn't have loads of big chances but Man United were frustrated, they couldn't get out and Arsenal were a team who were on the front foot and were the aggressors in this game."
