Rio Ferdinand offers honest verdict on Jonny Evans career post Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand believes Jonny Evans should still be playing for one of the "top three or four" clubs in England.

The Northern Ireland defender joined West Bromwich Albion after leaving Manchester United in 2015 before moving to Leicester City in 2018.

The 33-year-old made 198 appearances for United during an eight-year spell at Old Trafford and went on to win three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Ferdinand says Evans has enjoyed a "fantastic career" in England, and hailed the defender's diligent approach to football.

But he also believes Evans had the talent to perform at the top end of the Premier League after leaving Manchester United.

"I think he has had a fantastic career," said Ferdinand, who played alongside Evans for six seasons at Manchester United.

"And it is justified because of the worth ethic he has shown as a young kid. He was always serious about his game, always worked hard and was diligent.

"He is a man about details, and you get a longer career when you're like that. You earn your luck.

"I don't mean any disrespect to Leicester, but I am surprised he didn't go to one of the top three or four clubs outside of Manchester United, because I think he is that good as a centre back.

"I think his career won't have come as a surprise to anyone who watched him growing up and coming through the ranks at Manchester United."
