Rio Ferdinand names the Chelsea player who set the tone for Frank Lampard against Tottenham

Rio Ferdinand has praised the way Chelsea played approached their Premier League clash with Tottenham.

Frank Lampard’s side were looking to return to winning ways after being beaten by Manchester United on Monday night.

And the Blues got off to the perfect start after the returning Oliver Giroud fired them ahead inside the opening 10 minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Further chances followed for Lampard's side, while Spurs were forced to feed off scraps as they struggled to get out of their own half in the first 45 minutes.

Frank Lampard: He has got attacking players

Marcos Alonso added a second goal early in the second half, with Chelsea holding on for victory despite Spurs pulling a goal back late on.

And Ferdinand believes the way Lampard’s side pressed as a unit, aided by Mason Mount, helped set the Blues on their way to fine a 45 minutes work.

“I think a big part of that has been Mason Mount," the former Manchester United man told BT Sport.

“He sets the tone. First tackle there we go, let people know what you are about. Barkley behind that as well. This is where they have all been in tune together.

“You only get this if there is intent from the manager and the training ground. They all know their triggers and it is about timing and getting there at the right time.

“They are not going in ones they are going in groups.”
