Rio Ferdinand names Manchester United's two standout players from Young Boys clash

Rio Ferdinand has claimed only Mason Greenwood and Luke Shaw could figure in Manchester United’s first team on the basis of their first half performance against Young Boys.

United interim boss Ralf Rangnick rang the changes for their final Champions League group game with their place in the last-16 of the competition already confirmed.

A clutch of squad players including Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic were handed chances to impress Rangnick, in the hope of forcing their way into the German’s plans.

The 63-year-old’s appointment has given the United's stars a clean slate and an opportunity to play a bigger role than they may have expected under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, according to Ferdinand only Greenwood and Shaw seized the opportunity to push for a spot in United’s starting line-up.

“Greenwood and Luke Shaw are the ones that standout that can play in the Premier League," he told BT Sport.

“When you make that many changes you have to remember it’s not easy to do that. It’s a complete change of squad and it’s difficult to do that.

“You want to see the young players come on, it's a part of the club but they need to get the job done.”

Greenwood opened the scoring for the Red Devils with his fifth goal of the campaign and may have handed Rangnick a selection headache for Saturday’s trip to Norwich.

Meanwhile, Shaw hasn’t played for United since the 4-1 defeat at Watford last month due to injury, but after an impressive display against the Swiss outfit may be handed a start at Carrow Road in place of Alex Telles.
