Rio Ferdinand names key factor benefitting Man City ahead of Manchester United derby

Rio Ferdinand believes the return of Sergio Aguero could be crucial for Man City ahead of the Manchester derby this weekend.

City take on United on Sunday and find themselves in seventh, a point and a place behind their rivals.

Despite four wins in a row, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team go into the game on a low after being knocked out of the Champions League in midweek with a 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig.

In contrast, City secured their passage to the knockout stages a match day early, which took the pressure off for their victory over Marseille.

Pep Guardiola was able to welcome Aguero back from injury for the game, with the talismanic striker coming off the bench to net in the win.

Speaking on BT Sport, former United defender Ferdinand said Aguero's return in time for the derby could be crucial.

He said: " A true goalscorer and someone who knows his way around a big occasion. You can’t put a price on that.

" That experience as well, other players feed off that in the team. He’s been desperately missed, but Jesus has done his bit when he’s had an opportunity as well.”

Former City defender Joleon Lescott agreed with Ferdinand over Aguero's importance to Guardiola's side.

Yet Lescott said Guardiola still has some interesting decisions he needs to make in defence, with Aymeric Laporte and in-form John Stones battling for a place alongside Ruben Dias at centre-back.

Lescott said: “He’s got an interesting decision with Laporte and Stones for the weekend. Who starts with Dias? I think he’s set in stone.

With Sergio, you know he scores in the big moments and obviously Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez.”
