Rio Ferdinand makes Raphael Varane transfer claim that Manchester United fans will love

Rio Ferdinand has revealed he's already sent Raphael Varane a message urging him to join Manchester United this summer transfer window.

Speculation over Varane and his future has spiralled the last few months and the MEN understands Real Madrid are willing to sell him to the Premier League side.

That's a result of the World Cup winner only having 12 months left to run on his contract with the La Liga giants.

As well as securing a move for Borussia Dortmund forward and long-term target Jadon Sancho, figures responsible for incomings and outgoings at Old Trafford have prioritised a defensive partner for their £80million captain Harry Maguire.

Varane is just one name who has been mooted in that regard, though, with Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres being another - as he continues to target Euro 2020 glory with Spain.

Which centre-back would you like United to target this summer? Let us know in the comments section below.

Meanwhile, in between his punditry duties at the same international tournament, it seems as though former United captain Ferdinand has taken on a new role.

Indeed, during a Q&A session on his Instagram account, the 42-year-old has put United supporters on red alert with the claim he made about Varane.

Asked to send the Frenchman a message to help secure his services this summer, Ferdinand replied: "Already have done. Agent Ferdy."

As yet, the ex-United and England defender has not shed light on whether or not Varane responded, but it's clear that a high-profile swoop might be on the cards.

Having clocked up 360 games across 10 seasons with Real, the 28-year-old could follow Sergio Ramos in departing the Bernabeu during this summer window.
