Rio Ferdinand makes Manchester United vs Villarreal prediction

Rio Ferdinand has backed Manchester United to 'rectify' their 'disappointing' loss to Aston Villa at the weekend – by beating Villarreal in the Champions League.

United head into the midweek encounter off the back of a home defeat to Villa after Bruno Fernandes missed an injury-time penalty.

The game had looked set to end goalless until defender Kortney Hause flicked a near-post header beyond David De Gea in the 88th minute.

It means United head into their midweek Champions League tie with Villarreal off the back of a run of three losses in four matches, but United legend Ferdinand, who now works as a pundit for BT Sport, has backed them to get back to winning ways.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: "I think they will get a positive result. I think they will win.

"Unai Emery knows his way around ways of getting results. He will make things difficult but Man United have got the players to bounce back from a disappointing result at the weekend.

"We can't get away from that. It was a poor result and they have got to rectify that in the games coming up."

United face a couple of fresh injury concerns ahead of the Champions League tie, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saying captain Harry Maguire is facing a 'few weeks' on the sidelines with a calf injury. Luke Shaw could play a part, after also coming off injured in the Villa defeat.
