Rio Ferdinand makes Liverpool transfer claim over Timo Werner and Diogo Jota

Rio Ferdinand has questioned if Liverpool were ever interested in Timo Werner.

Jurgen Klopp was was desperate to add attacking reinforcements to his squad in the summer transfer window ahead of what was set, and has since been proved, to be a gruelling campaign.

It looked for some time that the clinical and rapid RB Leipzig forward Werner was Liverpool's top target, however, the club opted against making a move and the German instead joined Chelsea - where he has had a strong start to life in the Premier League.

The Reds went on to sign Diogo Jota, from Wolves, who has had an even bigger impact at his new club as has grabbed eight goals in his first 12 games.

With the signing going so well, Ferdinand has wondered if the club were ever in for Werner.

“I probably question whether they really were in for Werner," he said on BT Sport ahead of last night's 2-0 defeat to Atalanta.

"Because Jota came around quite quickly after that and they all seemed very happy with that."

Ferdinand has also praised the mentality of Liverpool for how they have reacted to Virgil van Dijk's season ending injury.

He added: "It’s the way that he has the mentality that he’s created when Virgil van Dijk got injured, for instance, you look at it - they’ve played seven games since - won six, drawn one.

"Their defensive record - they’ve conceded three goals. It’s improved even when van Dijk is out.

"That’s about creating that mentality, creating that environment where the players think that they won’t suffer because a big cog in their system has gone, and they’re gonna prove people wrong.”
