Rio Ferdinand makes Liverpool admission after Manchester United comparison

Rio Ferdinand has admitted that Liverpool are on the verge of becoming one of the Premier League's 'great teams' after comparing them to Manchester United.

Liverpool made it 19 wins from 20 league games this season thanks to their 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Thursday evening.

This now means the Reds lead Leicester City by 13 points with a game in hand as the league breaks for the third round of the FA Cup this weekend.

Liverpool are naturally heavy favourites to win the domestic title for the first time in 30 years.

But Ferdinand insists that Jurgen Klopp's men must get over the line before being compared to previous title winners, with the former England star asked to compare the Reds to United's Premier League and Champions League winners of 2008.

"Need to win back to back league titles before being compared but there’s no denying they’re en route to being a great team," Ferdinand tweeted during a Q&A with fans on social media which he labelled 'AskRio' .

Ferdinand was also on punditry duties for Liverpool's aforementioned victory over Sheffield United and he explained how the players will feel as they continue to lead the way.

"I joined a club that was used to winning Premier League titles. I looked to people like Ryan Giggs who had already won five or six before I was there," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"But for Liverpool there is only James Milner who has won a league title.

"They'll be looking at him but they will be using their manager as that yardstick as they aim to not get carried away."
