Rio Ferdinand makes Erling Haaland and Liverpool prediction after Champions League hat-trick

Rio Ferdinand doubts whether Erling Haaland will continue his incredible goal-scoring form when Red Bull Salzburg travel to Anfield.

Haaland, the son of former Manchester City midfielder Alf-Inge, has notched a mammoth 17 goals already so far this term.

He scored a hat-trick as Salzburg hammered Genk 6-2 in their opening Champions League group game to go top of their group, which also includes Liverpool and Napoli.

But Ferdinand expects the Reds to deal with him in a more effective way than defences in Austria, and that of Genk, have managed.

"They won't know much about them but he has come in and scored lots of goals," the former Manchester United defender told BT Sport.

"He has scored 17 goals already this season.

"He is trying to make a name for himself but it will be a big ask for him to come and do it again against Liverpool."

Salzburg play on Merseyside on October 2 - which will be both sides' second game of this year's competition.

Holders Liverpool, who won their sixth European crown last term by beating Tottenham in the final in Madrid, lost their first match at Napoli.

A controversial penalty and late defensive mix-up saw the Serie A side take all three points making it four defeats in a row in group matches away from home for the Reds.
